General Volunteer

Volunteers who want to help at the library, and are willing to help wherever they can


Qualifications:

  • Ability to arrange items in numerical and alphabetical order, and read book-spines

  • Assist with the upkeep of the library

  • Aptitude for detail and neatness

  • Willingness to learn Dewey Decimal system

  • Willingness and ability to work independently

  • Willingness and ability to clean and maintain objects in the area

  • Willingness and ability to answer patron questions and direct patrons as needed

  • Willingness to volunteer during the weekdays and some weekends

  • Physical ability to push, bend, stretch, and stand for hours*

  • Willingness and ability to work with patrons of all ages

  • Must be at least 14 years of age**

  • Adults (those 18 years of age or older) must be able to pass a background check (BCI) and be fingerprinted, post-acceptance of the application


Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with the general upkeep of the library.

  2. Return books or other materials to appropriate locations on shelves

  3. Straighten books on shelves to ensure uniformity and neatness in appearance

  4. Read spine labels on materials to ensure items are accurately shelved and make corrections where necessary

  5. Refer patron requests or questions to the appropriate library staff

  6. Pick up toys and objects in the area and clean them as needed

  7. Welcome patrons to events and distribute information as needed

  8. Help prep for, set up, and clean up for events as needed

  9. Assist patrons with event activities


Training Provided:

Orientation to the library, specific training on the Dewey Decimal system and book shelving, and the Library Standards of Conduct. Other training as needed. No previous experience is needed.


Grounds for Termination: Inability or unwillingness to perform job-related tasks proficiently, failure to arrive on time to scheduled shift on a regular basis without notice, failure to show up to shift without prior notice, failure to follow Library Standards of Conduct.


Skills and Experience: The ability to tolerate high noise levels and occasionally chaotic surroundings with a calm attitude is required.
